Möller Organ Company Opus 11840
The
organ in Faith Lutheran Church is an
electro-pneumatic extension organ built by
the Möller Organ Company of Hagerstown,
Maryland. Möller was one of America’s
most important organ building firms
throughout the twentieth-century, and their
ubiquity stemmed from the large number of
organs they built. This instrument was
completed in the last year of
Möller’s operation, thus it marks an
end of an era. The construction of the
organ is solid. In 2006, the voicing
process was completed by Goulding &
Woods in Indianapolis.
The instrument is composed of seven groups
of pipes, each group extended beyond the
normal playing range to allow for them to
play at several pitch levels. For example,
the 8’ Principal on the Great can
also play as the 4’ Octave, the
2’ Super Octave, and in the Pedal.
This scheme allows for great economy among
the resources of the organ.
Musically, the organ provides a nice
variety of timbres and ensembles even with
its modest resources. The flute on the
Great (Bourdon, Gedeckt, Flute) is a
stopped wooden set of pipes that blends
nicely with the Principal. The flute on the
Swell (Rohrflöte and Sifflöte) is a metal
set with pierced stoppers to allow more
harmonic development and color. The trumpet
stop is enclosed in the Swell box providing
control of its volume. The entire ensemble
is cohesive and rich, filling the room with
sound while not overpowering
listeners.
